My First Local Parkrun: Facing Fears and Finding Joy

For years, the idea of doing my local parkrun felt like something I’d never really do. I’ve always avoided running locally, worrying about silly things—would I be too slow? Would it feel cliquey? Would I fit in? It’s strange, isn’t it? For someone who loves running, the thought of showing up to a free, inclusive community event filled me with anxiety.

But last week, something changed. A good friend suggested we give it a go together, and after a bit of hesitation, I said yes. I figured if nothing else, it would be nice to run with someone I trust and share the experience.

On the morning of the parkrun, I felt a mix of nerves and excitement. Standing at the start surrounded by runners of all ages and abilities, I realised how unfounded my worries had been. Nobody cared how fast or slow anyone was—there were people with dogs, families with kids, speedy club runners, and people who just looked happy to be out in the fresh air.

The run itself was surprisingly enjoyable. I wasn’t pushing for a time or trying to prove anything; I just ran at my own pace, chatting with my friend and soaking up the atmosphere. There were friendly marshals cheering us on and little moments that reminded me why I love running in the first place. By the time we crossed the finish line, I couldn’t believe how much fun I’d had.

Looking back, I realize that my fears about parkrun weren’t really about the event itself but more about my own insecurities. I’d built it up in my head as something intimidating when, in reality, it was just a lovely community gathering. I may seem like a confident runner, I take part in big races but Parkrun has always felt like big a deal to me.

Taking that first step was a big deal for me, and I’m so glad I did it. I’m already looking forward to making parkrun a regular part of my routine. It’s not about times or competition; it’s about connecting with others, enjoying the outdoors, and being part of something bigger.

If you’ve ever hesitated to join your local parkrun, I can honestly say: just go for it. Whether you walk, jog, or run, the only thing that matters is showing up and having fun. You might just surprise yourself—like I did.

Happy Running xx
